Anal Cancer

Anal cancer is a malignancy that develops from any of the three types of mucosal tissue located in the anal region. Risk factors include human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, history of anal warts, HIV infection, anal intercourse, and smoking. Stages of anal cancer use Tumor, Node, Metastasis (TNM) staging as well as Stage Grouping using Stages I, II, III, or IV. Staging systems describe the extent of cancer throughout the body and help doctors determine which treatments to offer. Anal cancer can be treated with surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
