Bile Duct Cancer
Bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, is a cancer that originates in the bile ducts. The bile ducts are small tubes that carry bile, a yellowish fluid, from the liver to the gall bladder and then to the small intestine, where it helps with digestion of fats. Bile duct cancer is a rare condition and is more common in people over the age of 50. Known causes of bile duct cancer include conditions that increase inflammation or damage the bile ducts, which can affect both men and women. One example is a disorder known as primary sclerosing cholangitis, or PSC, which causes inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts. The stage of bile duct cancer can vary at diagnosis and throughout treatment. Stages of bile duct cancer include I, II, III, and IV. The effectiveness of the treatment may depend upon the stage at diagnosis.
